Though Maybunga is one of Pasig’s oldest barangays—dating back to the pre-colonial era when it was a riverside settlement—the parish itself represents the growth of the community in the late 20th century. It was established to serve the burgeoning population of Maybunga and nearby San Miguel, providing a localized center for worship outside the city proper.
Architectural Highlights
The church is a beautiful example of contemporary Filipino ecclesiastical design, focusing on light and airflow.
The Main Altar: The sanctuary features a striking reredos (altarpiece) that draws the eye upward, emphasizing the height of the structure. The design is clean and modern, avoiding the heavy ornamentation of colonial-era churches in favor of a serene, prayerful atmosphere.
Stained Glass Art: One of the most captivating features of the parish is its stained glass windows. They depict various biblical scenes and the life of Saint Anthony, casting vibrant colors across the nave during morning and afternoon masses.
The Adoration Chapel: For those seeking quiet reflection, the parish maintains a separate Adoration Chapel that is often cited by locals as one of the most peaceful spots in the barangay.
The Feast of San Antonio Abad
If you want to see the parish at its most vibrant, visit in January.
The feast day of Saint Anthony Abbot (January 17) is a major event in Maybunga. Following the tradition associated with the saint, the parish often holds a Blessing of Animals. Residents bring their pets—ranging from dogs and cats to birds and livestock—to the church courtyard to receive a special blessing, a colorful and heartwarming tradition that brings the whole community together.
Neighborhood Guide: Getting There and Around
The church is situated along Stella Maris Street in Maybunga, a bustling area that offers a more residential, authentic look at Pasig life.
How to Get There: From the Pasig City Hall or the Palengke, you can take a tricycle or a jeepney heading toward Maybunga or Rain Forest Park. The church is a well-known landmark, so most drivers will know exactly where to drop you off.
Nearby Attractions: Pasig City Rainforest Adventure Experience (RAVE). Just a short ride away, this is a massive park featuring a zoo, water park, and adventure facilities.
Local Eateries: The streets around the parish are lined with small bakeries and carinderias serving classic Filipino snacks like merienda favorites (turon, banana cue, and pancit).
